Exposing students to culturally-diverse music is central to music teaching and learning. Combining theory and practice, this workshop will explore different ways to approach music of diverse cultures in music education. We will begin with a discussion of our own views of culture, diversity, and representation of otherness, to understand how they might impact our curricular choices. Next, we will explore different frameworks for teaching music of diverse cultures, using the music of Brazil as an illustrative case.  With these frameworks and ideas in our toolbox, we will brainstorm and design culturally-sensitive musical activities to be used in different educational settings.
